Care & Installation
Slate is a siliceous stone, which makes it more chemically tolerant than marble or limestone. It is not acid-safe, though: avoid vinegar, lemon, and acidic bathroom or toilet cleaners, which can still dull or damage the surface.
Clean with a neutral pH stone cleaner, warm water and a soft cloth, then rinse and dry. Avoid scouring powders and abrasive cleaners, and never mix ammonia and bleach; used together they create a toxic gas.
Sealing increases resistance to staining, it does not make stone stain-proof. Reseal when water stops beading on the surface rather than to a fixed schedule.
Slate has natural cleavage planes and can spall or delaminate under high-pressure cleaning, so clean with a neutral pH cleaner and a soft brush at low pressure only. An oil-repellent penetrating sealer outdoors helps reduce moss and algae in the textured surface, which is common in a subtropical climate.
Natural stone crazy paving and cobblestone should be laid on a full mortar bed, never on adhesive dabs; dab-bedding causes reflective staining that can't be reversed. Structural control joints need to be carried through to the surface as flexible movement joints. Ask us for the recommended base and grout for your specific application before you start.

Loose stone cladding can be installed in two main ways: dry stacked or grouted. Each method creates a distinct visual effect and comes with its own set of practical advantages.
Dry stacking means laying the stone edge to edge without visible mortar joints on the surface.
Creates a tighter, cleaner finish that puts the natural stone front and centre. Offers a more modern, architectural look with strong shadow lines.
Best for internal walls, fireplaces, or protected outdoor features where minimal movement or moisture is expected. Highlights the shape, texture, and variation of each individual stone piece.
Requires more time and skill in placement, especially with irregular pieces.
Grouting fills the joints between the stones with mortar — this can be raked back, flush, or even over-grouted depending on the style.
Softens the overall look, making it more traditional or rustic depending on grout colour.
Adds contrast or colour definition — light grout can brighten the wall, dark grout can deepen the pattern.
Helps to stabilise and bind the pieces, especially useful for exterior or load-exposed walls.
